Well I am please to say that our 1st Capturing Life Workshop was a huge success! Eight moms joined me for an early morning learning session followed by an on location shoot on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. Below are some of the highlights from the workshop.

Attendees got a 60 page booklet filled with “tricks of trade” on how to take amazing portraits. They learned tips on correct lighting, perspective and getting the most out of their DSLR’s settings.

After 2 hours of classroom time, we headed outside to meet out cute models Becca and Ruby. Both were pros in front of the camera(s). They didn’t skip a beat having not 1, but 8 photogs taking their pictures.

Thank you for a wonderful day ladies!

If you are interested in attending a workshop, you can find all the details on my website. There are currently 2 spots left in the September 10th workshop!

PS. Here is a little before and after from workshop attendee, Cyndi Wells. I had students send in their 3 best pictures before the class and some pictures after the class based on what they learned. Congrats Cyndi.. you are well on your way!!

I just finished a session w/2 girls that I photograph every year and realized… Wow, this is the 4th Fall in a row that I’ve done a session w/them. To be honest.. their Mom is one of my BFF’s, but 4 years ago, she was just an neighbor that knew I dabbled in photography and asked me if I’d like to practice on her kids. I was by no means a professional at this time.. but the passion had started. I thought it would be fun to post shots from each session. Needless to say… I think we’ve all grown quite a bit.

Note: A didn’t go back and re-edit the pictures. I only watermarked the older ones.

2007:

Notes and critique.. These would have been taken w/my entry level DSLR.. A Nikon D40. I had owned the camera for a little under a year, so looking back… a good start huh? Super cute kids… maybe a little too much orange from me. Oh and I spent hours whiting out the background (white balance on the D40 was a little lacking).

2008:

Notes: 2008.. the year I feared orange and made everyone look pale (as they are here). Girls still super cute. These images were taken at the end of my Portfolio Building stage… I was about to go Pro. These images were taken w/a Nikon D80 and probably my 85mm 1.8.

2009:

Notes: Girls are too cute, no? I had upgraded to a Nikon D300 by this time. Again, probably taken with my 85mm 1.8. Still pretty true to my current style.

2010:

Notes: All perfect no?? Taken w/my D300 & 50 1.4mm lens combo. My favorite!

I want to add a special thank you the Mom of these lovely ladies, DeAnna Robertson, who has supported me and encouraged my photography for the past 4 years. You are a true and rare kind of friend. Love you!

OK.. so I love the outfits on these 2! As I am posting (and we have passed Halloween), they are getting me in the Holiday spirit! I was told little Miss may be a challenge… but I thought she did quite nicely! She was a bit more interested in play than posed, but we figured [...]

I love the dynamic captured in this one!
